I believe that the key to sustained success in meeting business and service objectives lies in having a clear sense of organisational purpose and raison d’être. Effective work with service users occurs when the staff culture mirrors the inclusivity, openness to learning and support that it wishes to facilitate in the community. Achieving this requires investment and true commitment from the organisation.
I was Dean of Health and Social Services at the University of Wales, Newport and have 21 years’ experience of lecturing and working in senior management in higher education. In my management roles, I fostered the development of a cross-disciplinary culture among academic subject areas, leading to many innovations in systems and practice. I also served for four years as a Council Member at the Care Council for Wales where I contributed to policy-making, practice and guidance for social work and service user inclusion. My current role is as a psychotherapist, RMN and mental health specialist. I work part time in the NHS as a Clinical Supervisor Trainer and run short and long courses in clinical and consultative supervision and CPD. I also facilitate supervision groups of health professionals. I specialise in the Balint and Hawkins & Shohet approaches. Additionally, I have a small private practice as a psychotherapist and am trained to teach 8-week courses in mindfulness.
