- Pursuing greater involvement of and control for people on the receiving end of social services and health services
- Management development, particularly through overcoming unhelpful professional and organisational boundaries
- Services for older people, particularly extra care housing
- Services for people experiencing mental health problems, focusing on recovery
I am committed to finding ways to give people greater control over their own lives, with a determination that the language used is a critical ingredient. In addition, I believe that collaboration and integration are essential means to improve services for people, since they offer the chance to avoid 'giving people the run-around'.
I have considerable experience in local authority social services, having been director of social services in both Torfaen CBC and Newport City Council. Ialso carried responsibility for housing in Torfaen and in Newport for customer services and latterly education. In addition, I was an academic for 10 years at Bristol Polytechnic and University of Bath, where my research and consultancy interests were services for older people and tackling racial inequality in professional practice. I was also President of ADSS Cymru in 2008–09 and was lead director in Wales for services for people experiencing mental health problems and led the development on the regional commissioning of foster care and residential care services for children and young people.
