Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults – Understanding the Investigation and Assessment of Abuse (POVA Level 1 & 2)
Aim: To increase understanding of the abuse of vulnerable adults and the action to prevent it

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Identify different forms of abuse
  • List possible indicators of abuse
  • Clarify action in response to abuse
Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults – Assessing and Investigating Abuse (POVA Level 3)
Aim: To apply local policy and procedures to the assessment and investigation of abuse and wilful neglect

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Explain the values and attitudes impacting on the assessment/investigation of abuse
  • Apply assessment/investigative skills in a range of situations
  • Detail the arrangements for supervision and consultation throughout assessment/investigation process
  • Provide appropriate support to vulnerable adults and others throughout the protection process
  • Prepare for and participate in a case conference
  • Explain options for action and the likely outcomes
  • Prepare and implement an adult protection plan
Everybody’s Business – Child Protection
Aim: To provide staff working with children and families up to date information which allows them to identify and respond appropriately to concerns about Children’s safety and wellbeing

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Understand what constitutes child abuse and how to identify it
  • Understand child protection thresholds
  • Develop an awareness of child protection legislation
  • Locate child protection procedures and be guided by them
  • Explain how to make a child protection referral
  • Describe why a coordinated response to child protection concerns is essential
Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children – Chairing and Minute Writing Skills
Aim: To promote effective chairing skills and to clarify when to include reports of discussion as well as decisions and action points agreed at either adult protection strategy meetings of case conferences.

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Understand the importance of well chaired and structured decision taking
  • Communicate the critical role of the strategy meeting and the case conference in the protection vulnerable adults or children
  • Explain the purpose and importance of accurate, prompt minutes in the protection process
  • Produce accurate, confidential minutes for dissemination to partner organisations
Managing to Protect
Aim: To work with strategic managers from health, housing, social care, police and regulators/inspection bodies to explore joint agency responsibilities and a team approach to prevention, protection and detection of abuse to vulnerable adults

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Use, national and international, data to determine the prevalence of abuse within their community
  • Explain the impact of abuse on victims lives and develop effective strategies to encourage more people to report abuse
  • Use impact and prevalence data to develop an effective intervention strategy
  • Evaluate the implications of strategy for future community and workforce development
  • Understand when it is appropriate to implement a ‘serious case’ review
  • Agree arrangements for auditing and reporting progress on the implementation of an agreed strategy
