Risk Assessment and Management in Mental Health Care
Aim:
To promote the benefit of planned risk taking and at the same time reduce the potential for negative consequences resulting from behaviours associated with this group of people.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
- Differentiate between hazard & risk
- Explain the underlying principles for supporting people in making decisions and managing personal risk
- Explain the link between consequences, likelihood of harm and human rights
- Explain the relationship between choice and risk
- Explain the need for a balanced approach to risk so rights are not compromised
Exploring the Experience of Dementia
Aim:
To provide an insight into what the experience of dementia might be like and an introduction to person centred care. We aim to provide a basic understanding of dementia,
a person’s behaviour and to demonstrate the value of teamwork in the care of people with dementia.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
- Explain what dementia is and how it can affect people’s lives
- Explain how good quality care focuses on the positives in people’s lives rather than the negatives
- Practice good communication as in effective means of providing support
- Explain ideas and methods to improve the well-being of people with dementia in their care
Mental Health in Later Life
Aim:
To explore the specific mental health problems of older adults and to equip practitioners in mainstream, non-specialist settings with the knowledge and skills to think creatively about how to support this group of people.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
- to discuss their understanding of what constitutes mental health and well-being
- Identify factors which can sustain or undermine well-being in older age, in relation to dementia/depression
- Discuss schizophrenia, delusions and hallucinations and possible interventions
- Explain how care practice can contribute to mental well-being.
