Course details – Mental Capacity

Mental Capacity Act 2005 for Social and Health Care Practitoners
Aim: To familiarise staff and organisations, working with people with reduced capacity, with the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act and Code of Practice.

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • Explain the history of decision-making in relation to people who lack capacity
  • Use the knowledge to empower and support people who lack capacity to make some decisions
  • Explain the statutory protection available to those who act in connection with the care and treatment of another
  • Better protect individual vulnerable adults from poor practice, abuse or neglect
Mental Capacity Act 2005 for Providers of Social and Health Care Service
Aim: To familiarise managers and professionals working with people with reduced capacity with the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act and the accompanying Code of Practice.

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • To use the knowledge and skill gained, to empower and support people who lack capacity to make some decisions
  • Explain the statutory protection available to those who provide health or care support to a vulnerable adult who may lack capacity to consent
  • Demonstrate how the Mental Capacity Act can improve the safety and well-being of someone who lacks capacity to give or withhold consent to an intervention.
  • Understand the importance of accurate record keeping in accountability
Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS)
Aim: To explore the background to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and understand and apply the legal requirements of the amended Mental Capacity Act 2005. We aim to link the legal requirements to existing systems in the care setting and familiarise participants with the key elements of the new Code of Practice.

Learning Outcomes:
The course will enable participants to:
  • To explain the background to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
  • Apply the legal requirements of the amended Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Link the legal requirements to existing systems in the care setting.
  • Apply the key elements of the new Code of Practice
